ACI-Pipe Sight Glasses for laboratory tests
We participated in an interesting project in which our pipe sight glasses type 620 were used in a pressure reactor vessel for laboratory tests. The processes that occur in this test set-up were described by our customer as follows:
In a so-called “jet loop reactor”, the specific interface between the fluid phase (consisting of an organic medium) and the gas phase (an acid gas) was to be increased significantly compared to current processes and thus the mass transfer was aimed to be improved.
In this case, our pipe sight glasses type 620 offer a direct visual access which can be used during the experiment to gain an initial subjective impression of the process and, furthermore, to apply specific optical measurement methods.
Due to the aggressive educts, the highly chemically resistant Hastelloy® C-22 had to be used inevitably as flange material. The alloy Hastelloy® C-22 can usually be found in flue gas desulphurisation plants, in the chemical industry, environmental protection plants, waste incineration plants and sewage systems. This alloy is moreover resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion. The machinability of this alloy is extremely poor and pushes even the highest quality solid carbide tools to their limits.
In these adverse process conditions, we made sure to use highest-quality sealing materials. The pure, multidirectionally expanded PTFE novaflon® 500 was used here. This material has universal media resistance to most alkalis and acids in the entire pH range (pH 0-14). The pressure reactor vessel is designed for an operating temperature of +150°C and an operating overpressure of 8 bar(g).
Our type 620 pipe sight glass is designed for a maximum of +200°C and an operating overpressure of 10 bar(g) in this configuration. It is made in the standard length of 200 mm ex works but deviating special lengths are no problem for us at all. The 360° all-round view also allows to observe the process without losses and over the entire length of the glass.
