What is the difference between ASTM and ASME?

ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) are two different organisations in the USA that deal with standards and specifications in the field of materials, construction and test methods. Here are the main differences between ASTM and ASME:

  1. Organisational purpose:
    • ASTM: This organisation focuses on the development and publication of international standards and specifications for materials, products, systems and services. ASTM standards are used in many industries worldwide.
    • ASME: In contrast, the ASME specialises mainly in engineering practices and codes. It develops codes that deal with the design, inspection and testing of pressure vessels, pipework and other mechanical components.
  2. Application areas:
    • ASTM: ASTM's standards cover a wide range of industries, including construction, aerospace, chemical, electronics, petroleum, environmental and more. They mainly concern materials and their test methods.
    • ASME: ASME codes and standards are more specific and focus mainly on pressure equipment and plant engineering. ASME codes are of great importance in the oil and gas industry, power generation, the chemical industry and other sectors.
  3. Products and standards:
    • ASTM: Standards for materials, construction products, test methods and much more are developed here. ASTM standards are generally internationally recognised and have a wide range of applications.
    • ASME: ASME develops codes and standards, such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) or the ASME B31 Code for Pressure Piping. These are more specific to pressure equipment and plant engineering and are often legally binding in various jurisdictions.

In summary, ASTM and ASME are two different organisations with different focuses and areas of application. ASTM develops standards for a wide range of industries, while ASME specialises in the field of pressure equipment and system design.
